Delhi Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Environmentalist R. K. Pachauri
A court in Delhi granted anticipatory bail to environmentalist R. K. Pachauri in a sexual harassment case and rejected the police plea for his custody on Saturday.
Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kumar Tripathi directed Mr. Pachauri to furnish a personal bond of Rs.50,000 and a surety of like amount as he rejected Delhi Police’s plea seeking his custody and stay on the interim protection granted to him in the case.
The court has earlier directed him to neither visit the premises of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), not to leave the country without permission, not influence any witnesses in the case directly or indirectly and join the investigation whenever required by police.
Cricket betting syndicate busted, one arrested
Delhi Police has busted an alleged betting syndicate operating during the ongoing Cricket world Cup with the arrest of a 57-year-old man who had set up a control room with 110 mobile phones at his home and was relaying ball-by-ball betting rates to bookies. The accused, identified as Shanti Swaroop Bhatia, a resident of Paschim Vihar, was arrested by a team of Crime Branch following a tip off. He was nabbed on Thursday red-handed during the India-Bangladesh Quarter Final cricket match, police said. Read more…
19-year-old Raped by Tantrik, aide
A 19-year-old girl from Delhi was allegedly gang-raped by a ‘tantrik’ and his accomplice in Sohna on Friday on the pretext of treating her for epilepsy. An FIR was lodged on Saturday. The accused are on the run.
According to the complaint, the survivor, a resident of Delhi’in Delhi, and her uncle had gone to Sohna to meet the tantrik, Hasan, to treat her for epileptic fits. Hasan agreed to treat the girl and asked her uncle to wait. He and called an accomplice, identified as Irshad. He told the uncle he would have to take the girl to another place to treat her.
The survivor said the tantrik and his accomplice took her to a secluded place and took turns to rape her. Her uncle became suspicious and started searching for her. Hours later, he found her on the road, her clothes tattered. He asked tried asking her what was wrong but could not make out, since the girl was in shock. He then took her home – where she narrated what had happened – and brought her to police on Saturday. A medical examination confirmed rape.
Two held for Theft, Attempt to Murder
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police arrested two persons on charges of robbery and attempt to murder.
Police said the two were involved in a Rs 22 lakh heist in Keshav Puram area. Police said the duo had also assaulted police personnel when they tried nab them. Police said, on March 9, they were informed about a daylight robbery committed near Prem Bari Pul in Keshav Puram.
The robbers snatched Rs 22 lakh at gunpoint from two men who were taking the money home from their office. Police said they had identified the main accused as one Kuldeep, a resident of Rithala. They set up a trap to nab him on March 10. Read more…
Warrant against Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel after he fails to appear in 2008 riot case
A Delhi court on Saturday issued a bailable warrant against Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel after he failed to appear before it in an alleged rioting case registered in 2008.
Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Sunil Kumar Sharma issued the warrant against Goel after he did not appear on Saturday as directed by the court on January 12.
Police had chargesheeted 21 persons — including Goel, BJP leaders Harsh Vardhan, Jagdish Mukhi and Aarti Mehra — in an alleged case of rioting and damaging public property during a protest by BJP activists at the CPI(M) office in Central Delhi in March 2008. Goel, who later joined the AAP, was elected Speaker of the Delhi Assembly on February 23. Read more…
