Crime by minors has been in news ever since the infamous 16th December gang-rape case in the city. One of the most brutal accused in the gang-rape case was a minor but he escaped the severe punishment just by the virtue of being a minor.
The city is witnessing a continuous rise in the number of minor criminals. As per statistics of Delhi Police, everyday there are at least three incidents involving minors and about four minors are arrested everyday.
If the incidents involving minors are analysed, it is revealed that most of the cases are of theft. Out of the theft cases registered by the Delhi Police, there is one case involving minors every second day. On an average, one minor is arrested each day for theft cases.
Sexual assault by minors is also very common and appears on second highest rank in crimes committed by minors. On an average, one incident of sexual assault by minors is registered almost every third day.
Among other crimes by minors, every month about seven cases of vehicle theft are executed by minors. Also, per month, three cases of murders have been registered against minors.
This steep growth in the number of cases of crime by minors is a serious cause of concern for everybody. If children are committing so much of crime, what would be they turn into when they grow up? What kind of society would we be?
One major reason for this growth could be the lenient laws for minor criminals. We are not criticizing the law of the land but just putting forth the point that there is a need to review & re-frame the laws concerning minors. If a minor criminal goes unchecked and unpunished, he will, for sure, not pay heed to anything once he attains maturity. And further, being a little young guy should not be an excuse to go around committing theft, killing people or assaulting the women!
There is genuinely a serious need to discuss and reach a logical conclusion to end the utter nuisance created by the minor criminals.
